With so many people concerned about the economy, you may wonder how you can possibly save money.  The big warehouse stores aren't new, but they're getting a new look by some consumers who want to save money during this down economy.

Costco in Myrtle Beach said their sales are up and their gas sales are also up. Some critics think they don't use what they buy before it spoils. But, there are ways to maximize your dollars and that's just what one local mom is doing.

Sarah Harter said she saves quite a bit of money buying in bulk. She started buying in bulk when her 2-year old son Joseph was born. Joseph has food allergies so she looks for deals on specialty items.

"We save a good amount,” said Harter. “You can get two things of lettuce for two bucks, if you look, and the milk is definitely the best place. He drinks soy milk and you get a lot of soy milk for very little."

She also buys diapers and wipes, which she claimed saves her a lot of money. Harter said she's cut back on trips to the grocery store and is saving money on gas.

The key to buying in bulk is using what you buy but throwing out half of everything basically erases your savings.

So, what's the best way to take advantage of buying bulk? Products that don't spoil such as canned and jarred food lasts for a long time but, if buy the proper storage containers you can buy staples like flour and rice. Just plan ahead and take a list to stay on track.

Many people save on items that are traditionally more expensive such as paper products, detergents, trash bags, cleaning supplies and personal care products.

But, where do you store everything? You can turn a section of your home into a mini-store. It can be your existing cabinets or maybe retro-fit your pantry. If you have a garage, you can invest in shelves to organize your products and bring them in as you need them.
