Planet Arf is now open for dogs and cats who are hip on health and want to stay a step ahead of former Vice President Al Gore in the green arena.

Planet Arf, owned by Scot Carnell, specializes in products for holistic care of dogs and cats.

Carnell said he became concerned about run-of-the-mill animal food after his cat, Calvin, died of cancer four years ago. He’s convinced Calvin’s demise was caused by the commercial cat food he was feeding him.

“I got pretty interested, almost fascinated, with pet nutrition,” he said during an interview at the business, located at 423 A-2 S. Cashua Drive. “I visited stores in other towns and when the opportunity came along, I decided to open my own place.”

Carnell’s research showed him that much of the pet food sold commercially in the big box stores leaves something to be desired.

“It’s pretty much what’s left over after human-grade food is processed,” he said. “It can contain chemicals and parts that we would never consider eating.”

Hence, the reason Carnell is carving out his niche.

“The food that I sell is all human grade and all natural,” he said. “There are no byproducts. It’s as good, if not better, than what we eat.”

But the food is just the start of the offerings at Planet Arf. There are healthy treats galore, such as jumbo biscuits, honey glazed chicken, carrot cake, beef stew and turkey.

The bones aren’t just basic, they’re natural to the bone.

“They aren’t cooked, so therefore they won’t splinter,” Carnell said.

There are also plenty of shampoos, health care items, toothpastes and toothbrushes, breath spray and supplements for diets.

For those who don’t want to wash their pets at home, Carnell also has a state-of-the-art, do-it-yourself pet washing station.

“The cost for you to wash your pet is $8,” he said. “I even provide the soap and towels. And if I’m not busy, I’ll even help out.”

Carnell’s background isn’t pet-oriented. He majored in music at Charleston Southern University. He then worked for 15 years at Florence Carpet and Tile, a family-owned business.

“I wanted to do something different,” he said. “I’ve always loved animals, and Planet Arf came very natural for me.”

The Planet Arf logo is a green globe with a dog head representing North America and a cat head representing South America. Their noses are touching.

Meanwhile, there’s a fancy stroller awaiting some special small dog at Planet Arf.

And for the feline lover, the cat’s meow is a cat tree that has everything.

“It’s the Cadillac of cat trees,” Carnell said. “It’s as good as you can get with a tunnel, perch and scratching post.”

Business hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Planet Arf’s telephone number is (843) 661-1027.
