DARLINGTON — Nancy E. Matthews, executive director of the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce since May 2006, has resigned.
Matthews has accepted a position with The American Heart Association as director of corporate relations, Florence/Darlington Heart Ball Galas, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate.
“When Nancy informed me of her decision to tender her resignation I was both saddened and excited,” John Kimbrough, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors and human resources manager at Wellman Inc., said in a press release issued Friday morning. “I was saddened because of the outstanding contribution Nancy has made to the greater Darlington, Lamar and Society Hill chamber of commerce and to our community as a whole.”
After having worked closely with many past executive directors, Kimbrough said, Matthews is “one of the best” and leaves the chamber in excellent shape. “Nancy has tackled and accomplished many issues that I, quite frankly, felt could not be achieved.“
Matthews will continue at the chamber until Aug. 25 and will orchestrate a membership event that is a first for the chamber involving more than 60 volunteers.
In the meantime, the chamber’s board has appointed a search committee that will review resumes and interview applicants for the executive director position. The job posting can be found in most local media publications and job sites.
The Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce was organized and incorporated in 1936, and has on its 21-member board representatives of the community’s industry, retail, energy and service sectors.
